A former teacher at Hethersett Academy, who we previously posted about in October 2025, has been jailed for four and a half years after pleading guilty to the following offences:

-Sexual Activity with a child while in a position of trust
-2 counts of sexual assault involving intentional touching
-2 counts of sexual communication with a child

Taylor was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

SOLDIER TURNED TEACHER WHO GROOMED ‘VULNERABLE’ PUPIL JAILED

A school pastoral care manager who groomed and sexually assaulted a teenage pupil has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Simon Taylor continued to prey on his victim while working at Hethersett Academy, despite receiving a written warning from the school that his conduct was “unprofessional”.

The 43-year-old, who had served in the army before becoming a teacher and lost a leg in a bomb attack in Afghanistan, targeted the child after she went to him for support.

Norwich Crown Court was told he presented himself as “someone other than a teacher” and made the pupil feel she should “only need or want to talk to him”.

The two had exchanged messages over a school message board, leading to the written warning.

But contact soon switched to via email and phone, where Taylor sent explicit pictures and would often resort to emotional blackmail and threaten to harm himself if the victim did not send him pictures.

He pleaded guilty to five charges at an earlier trial at Norwich Crown Court, including sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust.

Taylor also admitted two counts of sexual assault involving intentional touching and two counts of sexual communication with a child.

He was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life at a hearing this week.

In a statement read out at court on Monday, the victim said Taylor had stolen her childhood from her.

She described how his actions had “emotionally destroyed” her and affected every part of her life.

She said she had gone from someone who was “confident, outgoing and full of life” to someone who “struggles to leave their bedroom” and lived “in constant fear they would find and harm them”.

“My childhood was stolen from me. I never had the chance to be a normal teenager,” she said.

Isobel Ascherson, prosecutor for the case, said Taylor targeted the victim as “a particularly vulnerable child”.

She said the offending – which spanned more than two years – continued after she left the school.

She said the teacher made the girl “think that he was the only one who cared or could help her or would help her”.

The prosecutor said that married father Taylor, now of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, “groomed” the girl.

She said he “wanted to have sex with (the girl) and wanted to meet outside school”.

Ms Ascherson said Taylor said he would harm himself if the girl did not send him images.

She said that in one message Taylor wrote: “I look forward to some fun, as long as we’re both looking for fun, we can just have some fun until you find a nice lad hey.”

The prosecutor both of the sexual assault counts related to him touching the girl’s breasts, once in a car while the girl was still a pupil at the school and on another occasion in a car after she had left the school.

The girl reported Taylor to police in 2022, and also “told his wife what he had done to her”, Ms Ascherson said.

Taylor, formerly of Dereham, had previously served with the Norfolk-based Light Dragoons and had seen four tours of Iraq and Afghanistan.

He had broken nearly every bone in his body and had the lower half of his right leg amputated after his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in 2009.

The driver, Lance Corporal Richard Brandon, died in the blast which threw Taylor out of the vehicle.

After returning to civilian life in Norfolk the soldier undertook a number of high profile fundraising events for veterans’ charities.

His efforts included long-distance mountain bike rides across northern England and completing the longest downhill cycle race in the world in the Alps.

Richard English, mitigating, said that his client had no further therapeutic intervention after his discharge from the army.

Mr English added that Taylor “accepts that he has caused great harm” and had “genuine remorse, sorrow and shame” for what he had done.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Andrew Shaw said that Taylor “ignored formal and informal warnings about his behaviour”.

He added: “You targeted, manipulated and groomed [the victim] into thinking you were the only adult he cared”.

Mr Shaw praised the victim’s “remarkable dignity and courage”, while also acknowledging the “immeasurable harm” caused to her.

The Inspiration Trust which runs Hethersett Academy said Taylor had not been employed there since July 2021.
