Man Jailed After Admitting Multiple Strangulation Attacks on Partner

Published: 8 November 2025

A man from Swansea has been jailed after pleading guilty to multiple offences of intentional strangulation carried out against his partner during their relationship.

Shaun Hill, aged 30, entered a relationship with the victim in March 2024. The court heard that within a matter of months, his behaviour became increasingly jealous, paranoid and controlling. He would regularly turn up unannounced when she was out with friends and became aggressive while under the influence of alcohol.

Over the course of approximately 18 months, the victim endured repeated physical and emotional abuse. This included multiple incidents of strangulation, during which she lost consciousness, assaults that caused serious injuries, and episodes of extreme violence. One of the most serious incidents occurred while the couple were abroad in Majorca, where Hill strangled her to the point she could not breathe, leaving her unable to speak or call for help. During this assault, she sustained injuries including a broken nose and fractured ribs.

Despite the severity of the abuse, the victim lived in fear for a prolonged period before eventually confiding in a friend. The friend, deeply concerned for her safety, contacted South Wales Police. Hill was later arrested but initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming their relationship was “very good”.

However, following the investigation, Hill pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional strangulation. On Wednesday 29 October, he was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court to 41 months’ imprisonment. The court also imposed a restraining order, preventing him from having any contact with his victim for a number of years.

Speaking after sentencing, police described Hill’s behaviour as abhorrent and highlighted the importance of victims speaking to someone they trust, noting that doing so can be the first step toward ending prolonged abuse.

Victim Statement (Anonymised)

The victim later described the relationship as one marked by constant fear and escalating violence. She said she was repeatedly strangled until she passed out, had her hair forcibly pulled out, and was assaulted on numerous occasions. She stated that the abuse worsened over time, culminating in the violent attack abroad that left her with broken bones.

She has since spoken out to raise awareness, stating that no one should have to live in fear within a relationship and that the long-term impact of domestic abuse does not end with a prison sentence.

Public Safety Notice

Anyone who is currently in a relationship, considering entering one, or who has concerns for a friend, family member or neighbour is encouraged to consider using Clare’s Law (the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme). This allows individuals to request information from police about a partner’s history of domestic abuse or violent behaviour.

If you believe someone may pose a risk, Clare’s Law can help provide vital information that could prevent harm.

Support is available for victims of domestic abuse, and no one has to face it alone.
