2026 – Man given suspended jail sentence after assaulting former partner and breaching restraining order

A man has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting assaulting his former partner and breaching a restraining order.

Liam Campbell pleaded guilty at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court to assault and harassment by breaching a restraining order.

The court sentenced Campbell to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and also imposed a further suspended sentence after he committed the offences while already subject to a Community Order. The Community Order was revoked and replaced with an overall 24-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to complete an accredited rehabilitation programme, comply with probation requirements and remain electronically monitored until February 2027.

The restraining order was also varied and now remains in force until March 29, 2028. Under its terms, Campbell must not contact the victim except through a third party for matters relating to their child, and must not enter specified streets in Darlington.

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim, £154 court costs and an £85 Crown Prosecution Service contribution.

Court papers warn that if Campbell breaches the suspended sentence conditions or commits another offence during the 18-month supervision period, he could be required to serve 24 weeks in prison.

Following the sentencing, Campbell laughed about the outcome shortly after leaving court and briefly uploaded a TikTok video before deleting it after receiving criticism online.

He assaulted the mother of his children in front of their young daughters after breaching his bail conditions and restraining order, leaving the children frightened of him.
