Lee McNamara had his prison sentence increased after appeal judges ruled his original punishment was too lenient for the murder of Steven Curran.

McNamara, who was 25, killed Mr Curran outside the Dolphin Inn in Whitecraig in October 2010 by running him over with the victim’s own car. CCTV footage showed Mr Curran being dragged underneath the vehicle before McNamara drove over him again.

He was originally ordered to serve at least 13 and a half years in prison after being convicted of murder. However, judges at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh increased the minimum term to 16 years before he can seek parole.

The appeal judges said the murder was particularly serious because it was planned in advance and happened during a robbery. They also said McNamara should not have received any reduction in sentence for previously offering to plead guilty to culpable homicide, since he denied murder and was ultimately convicted of murder after trial.
