BRIDGEND MAN JAILED FOR 15 YEARS FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES

A 68-year-old man has been jailed for 15 years after being convicted of multiple sexual offences against a boy spanning almost a decade.

James Carr, 68, from Bridgend, was found guilty of 14 serious sexual offences following a week-long trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

The offences took place between 1986 and 1995 but were not reported to police until 2022.

Carr returned to Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, where he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

CONVICTED OF 14 OFFENCES

Following the trial, Carr was found guilty of:

* 10 counts of sexually assaulting a boy under 14
* Two counts of rape of a male under 16
* Two counts of buggery

The offences occurred over a period of approximately nine years.

Decades later, in 2022, the survivor came forward and reported what had happened to police, prompting an extensive investigation.

Despite the significant passage of time since the offences, detectives gathered evidence and built a case which ultimately resulted in Carr being brought before the courts.

Following a week-long trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all 14 counts.

15 YEARS BEHIND BARS

As well as imposing the 15-year prison sentence, the court placed Carr under a lifelong restraining order.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Following sentencing, Detective Constable Rebecca Evans praised the survivor for having the courage to report the historic abuse and for supporting the investigation through to its conclusion.

She said:

“The bravery it takes to come forward and report offences like these cannot be underestimated.”

Police said they hoped the conclusion of the criminal proceedings would help the survivor move forward after living with what happened for many years.

DC Evans added:

“We hope that this sentence will go some way in helping the victim rebuild his life and heal from the awful events that took place. I thank him for his strength and dignity throughout this investigation.”

POLICE: SURVIVORS WILL BE LISTENED TO

Investigators stressed that the age of an allegation does not prevent police from investigating sexual offences and attempting to bring those responsible to justice.

DC Evans said a significant amount of investigative work had gone into securing the conviction.

She added:

“An extensive amount of work went into this investigation, and this sentence sends a hugely positive message to victims of sexual abuse that they will be believed, their attackers will be identified, and they will be brought to justice.”

Police also encouraged other survivors of sexual abuse to seek support, even if they do not currently feel ready to make a formal report.

Carr is now beginning his 15-year prison sentence, while the lifelong restraining order and sex offender notification requirements will remain in place for the rest of his life.
