William John Hastings, aged 59 and residing in Lochwood, Beattock, was recently fined £1250 and received a three-year non-harassment order after being convicted of abusing his partner from March 2020 through June 2024.
The Dumfries Sheriff Court heard during the trial that he tracked her location via a mobile application and repeatedly questioned her about her whereabouts.
He also isolated the woman from her social contacts, restricting her from seeing friends and family, and discouraged her from leaving the house.
Additionally, Hastings criticized her appearance, pressured her to dress in a specific way, and asked her to perform manual labour despite her poor health.
He also repeatedly accused her of infidelity.
This week, the woman shared her story publicly, stating: “I am choosing to speak out now that my ex-partner has been found guilty of all the charges, with additional allegations also accepted and affirmed by the sheriff.
This outcome is not just a legal win but also a personal victory. It signifies the first time my truth has been acknowledged openly, helping to lift the silence and the burden I’ve carried for so long.”
She explained that throughout their relationship, she suffered emotional, physical, and psychological abuse, stating: “The charming and controlling person seen by others used power, intimidation, and manipulation behind closed doors.
Leaving that relationship was only the start — it was the beginning of a difficult journey to be believed, to protect my child, and to find my voice again.”
Regarding giving evidence in court, she remarked: “Standing there was one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever faced.
Recalling that trauma in a formal setting, being cross-examined, and having my motives questioned — none of it was easy.”
