Jail for Norfolk man who had been seeking out child abuse

A man who wanted to pay to see a woman sexually abuse her five-year-old son online only backed out as he thought he was being scammed.

William Brown had been “actively seeking out child sexual abuse material” and was offered the chance to see “a sexual abuse act” on a young child.

Norwich Crown Court heard the 37-year-old, of Carleton Rode, Norfolk had been in contact with a woman purporting to be the mother of a boy who had offered to carry out sex acts on him in return for money.

Brown wanted “proof” the child was real and asked for a picture of the child to be sent.

The defendant had been asked to send £70 or £30 in order to see different kinds of abuse being carried out on the child but “didn’t complete the arrangement” and “backed out” as he thought he was “being scammed”.

Lori Tucker, prosecuting, said the crown could not say for sure whether there was ever a real child who was to be abused.

This material came to light after a warrant was executed at his home at Mill Road in April 2023.

He was found to be in possession of indecent images of children including 28 of category A, the most serious.

Brown, who has a 2015 conviction for indecent images offences, appeared at court on Friday after he admitted attempting to arrange commission of child sex offence between May 31 2022 and June 5 2022.

He also admitted three counts of making indecent photographs of a child.

Judge Katharine Moore said Brown had been seeking out “sexual abuse between a mother and her five year old son”.

She accepted it was not possible to establish whether or not there was a real child to be abused and that he “backed out”.

But Judge Moore said he did not complete the transaction as he “feared being scammed” and not for his concern over the child.

Jailing Brown for 34 months, the judge said he was someone who “posed a high risk of serious harm to children.”

Rob Pollington, mitigating, said Brown, who has been diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety and depression, was an individual “with learning difficulties”.

He said the defendant has shown “genuine remorse” and has started desist from this type of behaviour.

Brown was also made the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and was also put on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
