A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison after seriously assaulting a six-month-old baby in Peebles.

Steven Dailly, of Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, was found guilty by a jury at Selkirk Sheriff Court last month. The assault took place at a property in the Borders town on 11 November 2023.

The court heard the baby suffered severe head injuries after being subjected to repeated blunt force trauma. Dailly gave conflicting explanations for the injuries, initially blaming another child before later claiming the baby had fallen from a pram.

Sentencing Dailly on Monday, Sheriff Peter Paterson described the attack as a serious assault on a defenceless child. A lifetime non-harassment order was also imposed, preventing Dailly from contacting the child’s mother.
