2025 – Man Jailed for Rape and Coercive Control Against Woman in Congleton
A man originally from Cellar Head, Werrington, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences and controlling behaviour against a woman while residing in Congleton.
Matthew Barnett was convicted last year following a trial in which a jury returned guilty verdicts on multiple counts of vaginal rape, oral rape and controlling and coercive behaviour.
The offences took place over a sustained period, during which the victim was subjected not only to sexual violence but also to coercive control that isolated her from her family for four years. The abuse left lasting emotional and psychological harm.
At Liverpool Crown Court on February 26, 2025, Barnett was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a restraining order to protect the victim and her children. The order prohibits Barnett from contacting or approaching them directly or indirectly, including via social media or any electronic communication, except through legal representatives regarding child-related matters where applicable.
The case has concluded in court, but concerns have been raised that there has been little public reporting of the conviction despite the severity of the offences and the impact on the victim and her family.
The sentencing brings legal closure to the criminal proceedings, with Barnett now serving his prison term.
