2026 – Woman wipes away tears as she tells court ‘she cannot do this to anyone else’

Marwa Saleem has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting domestic abuse offences against her former partner, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how Saleem subjected her victim to a pattern of violence, intimidation, coercive control and financial abuse during their relationship. The court was told she repeatedly assaulted her partner, strangled her on more than one occasion, bit her, slammed her head against a wall and left her covered in bruises and bite marks.

The victim described living in constant fear, suffering anxiety, depression, flashbacks and ongoing physical pain as a result of the abuse. She told the court the violence had affected every aspect of her life, leaving her afraid to leave her home, unable to trust others and struggling to rebuild her confidence and independence.

The court also heard allegations of financial control, with Saleem said to have regularly relied on her partner for money, forcing her to pawn personal belongings and leaving her financially and emotionally drained.

In a victim impact statement, the survivor described the relationship as a campaign of control, intimidation and violence, saying she feared for her life and was repeatedly threatened if she reported the abuse to police.

Sentencing, Recorder Michael Armstrong said the offences had a profound impact on the victim’s life and warned Saleem she had been on the threshold of an immediate custodial sentence.

Sentenced to 27-month prison sentence suspended for 30 months; ordered to complete two years of supervision and up to 30 rehabilitation activity days. An indefinite restraining order was also imposed, preventing any contact with the victim.
