Barnsley Man Jailed for 12-Year Sentence for Rape of Child

A 31-year-old man from Barnsley has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly raping a child.

Jake Kitching, of Worsbrough Bridge in Barnsley, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court where a judge handed down a custodial term of 12 years and three months for multiple sexual offences against a child. The sentence reflects the seriousness, prolonged nature and repeated pattern of abuse against the victim, who was between the ages of nine and 12 when the offences were committed. 

The court was told that the abuse included oral, anal and vaginal rape, carried out on multiple occasions over a sustained period of time. 

The offending came to light after an unrelated police encounter when officers stopped Kitching for traffic and drug-related matters, including driving without a licence and possession of Class A, B and C drugs.

Police confirmed that the evidence collected during the stop, along with the victim’s later disclosure to her mother and detectives, formed part of the prosecution case. 

Due to legal protections under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the identity of the victim cannot be published and is protected for life.

In passing sentence, the judge took into account the gravity of the offences and the significant harm caused to the child. Prison terms for serious sexual offences involving children reflect the high level of harm to victims and the need to protect the public.

Kitching remained in custody at the time of sentencing and began serving his sentence immediately following the hearing.
