A serving Police Scotland officer has been found guilty of raping two women and subjecting a third to a prolonged campaign of abuse.

Cameron Ross, 39, carried out the offences in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in 2012 and 2014, and later abused another woman in Inverness between 2019 and 2022.

During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was heard that he met one of the women at a party on Lewis before raping her between August and October 2012, pinning her down during the attack, which left her traumatised. A second woman told the court he restrained her and raped her in June 2014.

The court also heard that Ross subjected a third woman to sustained abusive behaviour over several years, including threats to kill her, physical assaults, and an incident where he brandished a knife. He was also convicted of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in June 2022 in Inverness, and of attempting to pervert the course of justice by trying to contact a witness during police proceedings.

Ross was suspended from Police Scotland in January 2024 after allegations emerged. He denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury. He has been placed on the sex offenders register and remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on 2 July at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Police Scotland confirmed that its Professional Standards Department will carry out a gross misconduct investigation following the conclusion of criminal proceedings.

Judge Alison Stirling refused bail and ordered Ross to be remanded in custody.

Chief Superintendent Helen Harrison said Ross’s actions were “completely incompatible with the values of Police Scotland” and stressed the impact on victims, praising their courage in coming forward.

She added that all reports of this nature are thoroughly investigated regardless of when the offences occurred or the status of the individual involved, and reiterated that officers are held to strict professional standards of behaviour both on and off duty, with any breach fully investigated and appropriate action taken.
