Darlington thug jailed after trying to bite off his mother’s fingers before repeatedly breaching restraining order

A Darlington man who tried to bite off his own mother’s fingers has finally been sent to prison after repeatedly breaching an order designed to protect her and breaking a promise he personally made to a judge.

Callum Crang, 29, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court to a total of 22 months behind bars after his latest offending brought him back before the courts.

Crang’s violence towards his mother dates back to 28 October 2024, when he went to her Darlington home despite being subject to a restraining order banning him from contacting her.

During the incident, Crang assaulted his mother and attempted to bite off her fingers.

He later tried to claim that the man at the property had actually been his brother. However, Ring doorbell footage undermined his story, with Crang captured repeatedly responding when addressed by his own name.

After spending several months in custody, Crang appeared at Teesside Crown Court in May 2025 and admitted common assault and breaching the restraining order.

The court heard that Crang had already amassed 23 offences across 11 previous convictions.

A psychiatric assessment found that he had a low IQ, while the court was also told he had been working to address drug and alcohol problems during his time in custody.

Despite his criminal record and the attack on his mother, Recorder Simon Jackson KC gave Crang another opportunity on 24 June 2025, imposing a 20-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Crang apologised to his mother and made a personal promise to the judge that he would not breach the restraining order again, saying he was disgusted with his own behaviour.

That promise did not last.

On 24 October 2025, Crang breached the restraining order once again.

His offending continued when, on 3 March 2026, he attempted to enter a property on Westminster Road in Darlington intending to steal. He eventually admitted attempted burglary shortly before he was due to stand trial.

Appearing from Holme House Prison by video link on Thursday, 8 October 2026, Crang was sentenced by Judge Francis Laird KC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough.

The judge acknowledged that the latest restraining-order breach was not the most serious example when considered in isolation, but said it had to be viewed against Crang’s previous offending. The court also heard that he had completed almost none of the rehabilitation work required under his suspended sentence.

Crang was handed 10 months’ imprisonment for his latest attempted burglary and restraining-order breach, with a further 12 months activated from his previous suspended sentence.

The sentences will run consecutively, leaving him facing a total of 22 months in prison.

Crang had been given the opportunity to remain out of prison and had personally promised a judge he would stop breaching the order protecting his mother. Within months, he was offending again.
