Rapist Jailed for Five Years After Preston Crown Court Trial

Andrew Shaw, also known as Andy, formerly of St Anne’s, Blackpool, with links to Chorley, was jailed in October 2017 after being convicted of rape at Preston Crown Court.

The case, reported on 25 October 2017, heard that Shaw raped a 22-year-old woman in the early hours of 26 June the previous year after she had been on a night out in St Anne’s.

The victim reported the assault the following morning. Shaw claimed the sexual encounter had been consensual. However, the jury rejected his account and found him guilty of rape following trial.

He was sentenced to five years in prison.

Detective Constable Ian Massey of Blackpool CID stated at the time:

“Sex without consent is rape and if a person is too drunk to give consent, it should always be assumed they have not given their consent.”

Police confirmed Shaw had disregarded the victim’s intoxicated state in order to take advantage of her.

Earlier Assault on Pregnant Partner Led to Suspended Sentence

In a separate case reported on 13 September 2016, Shaw admitted assaulting his partner, who was 25 weeks pregnant at the time.

The court heard he bit her on the head and arm during an argument, in what was described as a sustained attack on a vulnerable woman.

He pleaded guilty to two offences of assault.

Shaw was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, with probation supervision requirements. He was also ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge.

It is understood that Shaw has recently been subject to further rape allegations, which are a matter for police investigation.
