2010 – Bradford Woman Jailed After Two Puppies Starved to Death in Neglect Horror

A Bradford woman has been jailed after two young puppies were left to slowly starve to death in what prosecutors described as a shocking case of prolonged animal neglect.

Tiffany Starkey, 24, was sentenced by magistrates after admitting multiple offences of animal cruelty relating to several animals found in appalling conditions at a property in Greyfriar Walk, Horton Bank Top, Bradford.

The court heard that the two six-month-old terrier puppies were discovered dead inside a training cage when officers forced entry to the property. The animals were described as “covered in urine and faeces and totally emaciated.”

A veterinary examination later confirmed the puppies had not been fed for several weeks, with starvation determined to be the cause of their deaths.

Animals Found Living in Filthy Conditions

The court also heard that other animals inside the property had been suffering in similarly poor conditions.

A Siberian Husky and a corn snake were discovered without access to proper food or water in a small kitchen area that was described as being covered in litter and faeces.

Prosecutors said the kitchen measured just two metres by two metres, with the animals forced to live in cramped, unhygienic conditions.

The snake was also found in a cage that was too small for its needs and had no proper lighting, which is essential for reptile welfare.

Fortunately, the surviving animals were removed and are now being cared for by the RSPCA.

Investigation and Court Hearing

RSPCA inspectors and police officers were forced to enter the property after concerns were raised about the welfare of animals inside.

During the hearing, prosecutors said Starkey had pleaded guilty to five charges of animal cruelty, including failing to provide adequate food, water, living conditions and proper care for the animals.

The court heard Starkey had moved out of the property to live with her boyfriend around the end of May, leaving the animals behind.

However, a statement from her boyfriend suggested she had left the address two to three months before the animals were eventually discovered, claiming she returned occasionally to feed them.

Prosecutors said there was little evidence that anyone else had been caring for the animals, despite Starkey claiming another person had agreed to take responsibility for them.

Neighbours also reported not seeing anyone else regularly visiting the property.

Lack of Remorse

During the investigation, prosecutors told the court that Starkey showed little or no remorse when questioned about the animals and failed to provide any details about the person she claimed was responsible for their care.

Sentencing

Magistrates ultimately sentenced Starkey to four months in prison for the prolonged neglect that led to the deaths of the two puppies.

In addition to the custodial sentence, she was also banned from keeping animals for life.

The court described the case as one of serious neglect that caused prolonged suffering and ultimately death.
