2024 – Caergwrle man jailed after campaign of coercive and violent abuse against former partner

A Caergwrle man has been jailed after subjecting his former partner to a sustained period of controlling behaviour, violence and psychological abuse.

Christopher Parry, 35, of Sarn Lane, appeared at Mold Crown Court for sentencing after previously admitting controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship, along with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court heard the couple began a relationship in late 2021. During the relationship, Parry became increasingly possessive and aggressive, frequently checking his partner’s phone and accusing her of being unfaithful.

In one incident, during an argument in the bedroom, Parry threw a heavy metal door handle at her, striking her hand and shattering a finger. The injury was so severe that it required surgery and the insertion of a metal plate.

The abuse continued. On multiple occasions he kicked and slapped her during rows, often triggered by his suspicions and jealousy. He also damaged property throughout the home, smashing around 12 of her mobile phones — including one that had contained treasured messages from her late mother.

The court was told he verbally degraded her, calling her vile names and taunting her about her mother’s death. On one occasion, after she returned home from work, he repeatedly slapped her and dragged her along the floor, demanding to inspect her phone.

The following day, while she was preparing for work, Parry threatened her again — telling her she was “lucky” he had not drowned her in the bath. He chased her through the house, dragged her into the bathroom and made threats towards her dog. Fearing for her safety, she eventually managed to flee and contact police.

In a victim personal statement read to the court, she described being left mentally and physically exhausted by the abuse. She said she had lost significant weight, developed high blood pressure due to stress and anxiety, and was no longer in employment. She told the court she reported him to prevent him harming someone else and described him as a danger to women.

The court heard Parry has an extensive criminal history, with 39 previous convictions for 106 offences, including domestic violence and breaching restraining orders. Although drug use was said to fuel some of his behaviour, the judge noted he was also violent when sober.

Judge Timothy Petts sentenced Parry to two-and-a-half years in prison and imposed a 10-year restraining order prohibiting any contact with his former partner.
