At Maidstone Crown Court on 31 May 2024, William Cannon was sentenced to three years and three months’ imprisonment for offences of strangulation or suffocation.

The offences were prosecuted under Section 70 of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and Section 75A of the Serious Crimes Act 2015, which specifically criminalise choking, suffocating, or strangling a partner or family member.

The sentence, handed down as a standard sentence of imprisonment (SSED), reflects the serious physical and psychological harm associated with such offences. Strangulation is recognised as a particularly dangerous form of domestic abuse, often causing long-term injury and carrying a high risk of fatality.

This case serves as a reminder of the legal protections available to victims of domestic abuse and the courts’ commitment to addressing serious acts of coercive and physical violence.
