2024 – St Clears Man Avoids Jail After Assaulting Woman Twice in Five Days
A 43-year-old man from St Clears has avoided a prison sentence despite admitting to assaulting a woman twice in less than a week and attacking a police officer.
Wayne Gordon, of Water Street, appeared before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and one count of assaulting an emergency worker.
The court heard that the first attack took place on November 9, followed by another assault against the same woman just four days later, on November 13. The incidents, along with the assault on a police officer in Carmarthen, caused considerable alarm in the local community.
Despite the seriousness of the offences and Gordon’s history of previous convictions, magistrates handed down a 12-week custodial sentence for each charge, set to run concurrently. However, the court chose to suspend the sentence for two years, allowing him to remain in the community under strict conditions focused on rehabilitation.
As part of his suspended sentence, Gordon must take part in 20 days of rehabilitation activity and complete the ‘Building Better Relationships’ programme, which is designed to address abusive behaviour and prevent future offences.
He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £154, adding a financial penalty to his punishment.
While avoiding immediate custody, Gordon was warned that any further offences during the suspension period could result in the activation of his prison sentence.
