2026 – A man from Rhyl has been sentenced after a series of domestic abuse offences against his former partner, a court has heard.

Thomas Bell, 37, of Wellington Road, appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court after admitting multiple offences, including two counts of intentional strangulation, actual bodily harm, and criminal damage.

The court was told that during the relationship, which was described as on-and-off, Bell repeatedly subjected the victim to violence. On one occasion, he threw a stone candleholder at her head, causing a serious head injury. After the incident, he filmed her while she was injured and bleeding on the floor.

Further incidents included Bell strangling the victim on more than one occasion, including once on a staircase and once on a sofa. The court also heard that he damaged a neighbour’s door following an argument, prompting a 999 call after shouting and threatening behaviour was reported.

In a victim impact statement, the woman described feeling frightened and distressed as a result of Bell’s actions and said the abuse had left her suffering panic attacks and feeling unsafe.

Bell had already spent six months on remand, which the court said was equivalent to a 12-month custodial sentence. Taking this into account, Judge Nicola Jones imposed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

As part of the sentence, Bell was ordered to complete:
• a 26-session accredited behaviour programme
• 30 days of rehabilitation activity
• six months of drug rehabilitation
• six months of GPS monitoring

A two-year restraining order was also put in place to protect the victim. The judge warned Bell that the suspended sentence would be activated if he breached any of the conditions.
