🧠 BACKGROUND

Rosie Niessen, a 28-year-old prison officer and mother, met Scrimshaw in 2017 when she was just 21. Despite the age gap, she was charmed by him. She became pregnant after two months and later rekindled their rocky relationship in 2018. Over time, their relationship became toxic and abusive.

Rosie finally left Scrimshaw at the end of 2022, seeking a peaceful co-parenting arrangement. However, Scrimshaw grew paranoid and obsessed, wrongly assuming she was dating other people. She had applied for a court order to protect herself, and both were due to appear in family court just two days after the incident.

🩸 THE ATTACK

On the morning of March 14, 2023, Scrimshaw lay in wait outside Rosie’s house for 40 minutes, hiding in the bushes wearing a balaclava. As she left for work at 6:40 AM, he ambushed her — pulling her head back and slashing her throat with a Stanley knife.

He continued slashing her face, neck, and hands in a frenzied attack. Despite losing massive amounts of blood, Rosie fought back bravely. Her father, hearing her screams, ran out and jumped on Scrimshaw — suffering a stab wound himself while trying to protect his daughter.

A neighbour witnessed the horrifying assault and called police. Scrimshaw was arrested at the scene. Rosie was found in a pool of blood and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

⚖️ TRIAL & SENTENCING

Scrimshaw denied all charges, but CCTV and forensic evidence overwhelmingly proved his guilt. In January 2024, he was convicted of:

  • ⚖️ Attempted Murder
  • ⚖️ Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH)

He was sentenced to 28 years in prison with a four-year extension due to the level of dangerousness. A lifetime restraining order was also imposed to protect Rosie.

💬 ROSIE’S WORDS

“I was in shock. I went to turn around, and he grabbed my head and sliced my neck. I just knew I had to protect myself. I could hear my daughter’s voice in my head and that gave me the strength to fight him off.”

“I don’t believe I’m beautiful anymore. But I’m still alive. That’s what matters. And I’ll keep speaking out so others don’t suffer in silence.”
