A man subjected his former girlfriend to a terrifying campaign of abuse, using a homemade weapon and threatening her pets.

Shane Jewson, 24, admitted to controlling and coercive behaviour, which took place between April and September 2023. His actions included:
• Swinging a homemade flail and damaging property, causing the victim to hide in a bathroom and call police
• Slapping her
• Punching holes in walls and throwing furniture to intimidate her
• Taking her phone to prevent her from leaving
• Holding her in a bear hug to stop her leaving
• Making repeated threats of self-harm if she refused to stay with him or have sex
• Threatening to kill her cats
• Sending numerous unwanted calls and texts

During the court hearing, Jewson pleaded guilty and received credit for his plea. In mitigation, the court noted he had a “difficult start in life” and had been in care until the age of 21. He was sentenced to prison.

This case highlights the serious and varied nature of coercive abuse, showing that it can involve both physical threats and psychological manipulation.
