Man jailed for rape of woman in her Norwich home
A man who turned up at a woman’s house in the middle of the night before refusing to leave and raping her in an ordeal which lasted several hours has been jailed for seven years.
Saurabh Talwar, who worked at an Indian restaurant on the outskirts of Norwich had become infatuated with the woman, who had told him she was not interested in a relationship with him.
Norwich Crown Court heard the Indian national had been living in the UK since 2007 and had been seeking leave to remain in the country at the time of the attack.
The 39-year-old turned up at the woman’s house at about 2.30am on August 14, 2022, after messaging her to say he was “lonely”.
The court heard the victim thought she could “get rid” of Talwar by telling him to go away but he “refused to take no for an answer”.
After being let into the victim’s home – on the understanding a taxi would be booked to take him home – the woman – who was in her pyjamas – was “shaking with fear”.
Talwar left briefly to buy some drink and returned, by which time the woman had put more clothes on to “cover her body”.
But Talwar “took advantage of her” by kissing her and pulling her towards him before he got on top of her and “became rather more rough”.
The court heard Talwar attempted to rape the victim after touching her intimately.
Talwar “carried on” despite the victim “crying” and five to six hours later – after the victim fell asleep – got into her bed and raped her.
Talwar, of Yarmouth Road, Thorpe St Andrew, had denied rape but was found guilty of the offence following an eight-day trial earlier this month.
He was also found guilty of attempted rape, and two counts of assault by penetration.
He appeared for sentencing on Friday, when an impact statement from the victim was read to the court.
In it, she said she had been “confident” and “outgoing” prior to being raped but now knows she “will never be the same person I once was”.
She said after it happened she did not initially contact police as she was “scared I would be blamed for what he did to me”.
The victim said she had previously “blamed myself” and had “tried to hide it from people”.
Since being raped she said she suffered panic attacks and flashbacks and “can see him on me”.
She will no longer answer the door unless a friend has said they are coming and won’t answer to strangers.
The victim has since had to quit her job and has moved away from Norwich due to the impact of the attack which has left her feeling suicidal.
Jailing Talwar for seven years, Judge Andrew Shaw said the victim had suffered severe psychological and physical harm as a result of this “predatory attack” on a woman in her own home in the early hours of the morning.
He said Talwar had been awaiting a decision following an application for leave to remain but as a foreign national who received a sentence of 12 months or more would now be automatically deported at the end of his sentence.
Michael Edmonds, for Talwar, said there was “not a significant degree of planning” to the incident.
He said he did not use drugs or alcohol to facilitate the offence, no violence was used and nor was there any abduction or threats of violence.
Talwar was also put on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and made the subject of an indefinite restraining order, banning him from contacting the victim.
