When Justice Fails Victims of Domestic Abuse
Sam Marlow from Cambridge –
Another heartbreaking example has emerged of how the justice system can fail families affected by abuse.
A mother and her three children have endured years of emotional and physical trauma at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect them. (Photos show injuries one child received)
Despite clear evidence and the long-term impact on the children — one of whom has required ongoing counselling and therapy to recover from the abuse — the perpetrator received only a small fine of £470.
This outcome has left the family devastated.
For them, the scars are lifelong — while the person responsible walks free with barely any consequence.
It raises urgent questions about how courts respond to domestic and child abuse, and whether the system truly recognises the scale of damage these crimes cause.
No fine or short sentence can ever measure the pain of living in fear, the nights filled with anxiety, or the lasting trauma carried by a child who has been hurt by someone they trusted.
Survivors and campaigners are calling for stronger sentences, earlier interventions, and better protection for victims — especially children who witness or experience abuse.
They remind us that abuse isn’t just physical — it includes manipulation, control, and emotional harm that can destroy a person’s confidence and sense of safety.
