This is the face of a ‘sexual predator’ jailed for raping two young women in a Holiday Inn hotel and attacking a third after spiking her drink.
Philip Duffield was jailed for 12 years at Birmingham Crown Court today, Wednesday, January 7.
The 25-year-old, from Grosvenor Road, Solihull, will serve around two-thirds (eight years) of the term before he can be considered for release.
But he was also ordered to serve an extended period on licence for three years due to being classed as a ‘dangerous offender’ by Judge Heidi Kubik KC.
Reaching her decision, she told him: “You remain unrepentant with a total lack of insight into the impact of your actions on the women concerned and a total lack of insight into your own wrong-doing.”
Duffield claimed any sexual contact with his three separate victims in 2024 was consensual but a jury found him guilty of two counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration.
In April that year he raped an 18-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman at a Holiday Inn hotel, having met them at a Wetherspoon’s in Shrewsbury at the beginning of the night.
Both victims were described as being semi-conscious and ‘extremely intoxicated’ as he attacked them.
Both girls became increasingly intoxicated, with the teenager even falling asleep in one venue.
At one point she became separated from her own companion as she found herself with Duffield’s friend, who persuaded her to return to the Holiday Inn.
When she arrived the other woman was not there. But Duffield turned up a little later and was captured on CCTV carrying the unconscious young woman through the lobby.
After she regained some of her senses she wanted to leave, but Duffield stood in the way of the door.
A trial heard she was pushed or struck to the floor, causing her to hurt her face and retreat to the bathroom.
While there Duffield raped the 18-year-old girl on the bed as she was semi-conscious.
After the ordeal, the teenager had to witness him pin down and rape the older woman, who was crying throughout.
The next morning Duffield dropped the teen at a railway station. She was extremely upset and flagged down a stranger who took her to a police station where she reported what had happened.
He went on to sexually assault a third woman in the December of that year after taking her home and spiking her drink.
One of the victims reported Duffield to police shortly afterwards.
He was arrested and bailed but then attacked a third woman in Birmingham that December.
They had gone out to Glamorous nightclub before returning to Duffield’s home where he spiked the woman’s drink and sexually assaulted her.
Prosecutors described him as a ‘sexual predator’. Duffield had never previously committed a crime.
