One story below
In February 2022, a man from Kendal, Cumbria, was banned from keeping animals for five years after pleading guilty to two animal welfare offences at Barrow-in-Furness Magistrates’ Court.
According to the official court report published by Cumbria Crack, the man, Paul Spinks (31 at the time), of Overdale Close, Kendal, was convicted after leaving his dog, a bull terrier-cross named Snoop, locked inside a property for several days without food or adequate care.
The court heard that RSPCA Inspector Martyn Fletcher attended the address in Grange-over-Sands after a concerned member of the public reported the neglected animal. Through a frosted window, the inspector saw the underweight dog inside, along with a build-up of unopened mail suggesting no one had been home for days.
When police helped gain entry, they found Snoop in a severely emaciated condition — his ribs and spine visible, infested with fleas, and surrounded by piles of faeces. The smell of urine was overwhelming, and his food bowl was empty.
The dog was immediately taken to a nearby veterinary practice, where it was confirmed that he weighed just 14.4 kilograms, compared to the healthy average of around 23 kilograms for his breed and age.
Following months of care, Snoop made a full recovery under the supervision of the RSPCA Warrington, Halton and St Helens branch, where he was later rehomed.
In sentencing, the court issued Spinks a five-year ban on keeping animals, a 12-month community order, 100 hours of unpaid work, and ordered him to pay £495 in costs and surcharges.
