2023 – Throckley Pervert Jailed After Sexually Assaulting Woman in Front of His Girlfriend

A man from Throckley has been jailed after sexually assaulting a woman in his own home while his girlfriend was in the same room.

Paul Gerry, 49, of Hallow Drive, Throckley, left his victim “terrified” after he groped her during a gathering at his house in Newcastle. Newcastle Crown Court heard how the assault took place in front of his unsuspecting partner and left the victim traumatised.

Prosecutor Neil Pallister told the court that Gerry had been drinking when he touched the woman’s breasts and cupped her genitals without consent. The next day, he messaged the victim offering her “£40 or £50 cash” and asked her not to report what had happened.

The court was told that Gerry had a previous conviction for a sexual offence dating back to 2015. Judge Robert Adams said the repeat behaviour showed Gerry had either “failed to learn” from his past or was unable to control his sexual urges.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said the incident had left her feeling “closed in on myself” and that it had deeply affected her mental health.

Defending, Rachel Hedworth said Gerry was the main carer for his elderly father and that he struggled to understand why he acted the way he did, claiming he was not a heavy drinker and had little recollection of the night.

Judge Adams told Gerry:

“This was a shocking and humiliating experience for your victim. You have a previous conviction for a similar offence, and it is clear that a custodial sentence is the only appropriate outcome.”

Gerry was sentenced to 12 months in prison and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
