⚠️ Wigan Man Caught in Police Sting After Attempting to Meet ‘Teenager’ ⚠️
A 54-year-old IT worker from Wigan has been caught in a police sting operation after arranging to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl in London.
Mark Sheffield, of Thorley Grove, Standish, travelled to Euston Station in February with plans to meet a child he had been speaking to online. He had even booked a hotel in Shepherd’s Bush where he intended to take her.
Unbeknownst to him, the ‘teenagers’ he was speaking to were undercover police officers running a covert online investigation. Officers had created fake social media accounts to expose adults attempting to engage in sexual activity with minors.
Despite being repeatedly reminded that the individuals were underage, Sheffield continued to:
- Send inappropriate messages and explicit images
- Request sexualised photographs in return
- Make plans to meet in person
Upon his arrival at Euston Station, he was arrested by officers. A suitcase he was carrying contained disturbing items that confirmed his intentions.
He later appeared in court and pleaded guilty to multiple offences including:
- Grooming of children
- Attempting to meet a child following sexual communication
Sentencing is expected to take place at a later date.
