Cheadle Man Jailed for Five Years After Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Woman
A 57-year-old man has been jailed for five years after sexually assaulting a woman while she was asleep inside a house in Cheadle.
Mark Janke, of Cheadle, was convicted on two counts of sexual assault following a trial at Stafford Crown Court earlier this year. The assault took place in January 2021, when the victim was asleep and woke to find Janke assaulting her.
The incident was reported to police, and following a detailed investigation — including interviews with the survivor and the collection of supporting evidence — Janke was charged and taken to court. He denied the allegations, but a jury found him guilty on both counts in January 2024.
At a sentencing hearing on Tuesday, 4 June, Janke was jailed for five years, placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, and made subject to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting contact with the survivor.

Police Praise Survivor’s Courage
Detective Sergeant Daniel Martin, of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) Unit, commended the survivor for her bravery and perseverance throughout the investigation.
“We’ve worked hard to support the survivor throughout this case and I’m pleased that the outcome has given her some form of closure,” he said.
“I’d like to recognise her for the bravery she showed in coming forward and telling us what happened.
“I hope this sends a clear message to any survivors of sexual offences that you will be listened to by officers who are passionate about delivering justice. No matter how recent or historic the offences may be, we will seek the toughest punishment possible for those guilty of sexual crimes.”
