A man from Coxhoe has been jailed for nine years after violently attacking and raping a woman in a terrifying ordeal.

Jordan James, 25, was convicted at Durham Crown Court of rape, sexual assault, intentional strangulation and assault causing actual bodily harm. The court heard he subjected his victim to degrading violence, including strangling, spitting, biting and punching her.

In a powerful statement, the victim said she had been left traumatised but had found strength in speaking out: “My survival is not just for me but for every woman who has been a victim.” She has since had to move home, change jobs, and receive mental health support.

Judge Andrew Smith told James he appeared to gain “sexual satisfaction” from the violence and said the psychological harm he inflicted was profound.

James must serve at least six years before the Parole Board can consider release and will be on the sex offender register with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The judge also apologised to the victim for delays in the case reaching court.
