❌JASON NORBURY – WHITBY❌
2023 – Whitby man jailed after violent assault on ex-partner during argument
A Whitby man has been sentenced to eight months in prison after a drunken argument over a mobile phone escalated into a violent attack on his then-partner.
Jason Norbury, 29, assaulted the 19-year-old woman at a friend’s home in Whitby on 1 August, leaving her with significant injuries. York Crown Court heard that the pair had been in a relationship for around nine months when the incident took place.
During the evening, Norbury, who had been drinking, became increasingly paranoid about the victim’s interactions with other men. When she handed over her phone for him to use, he began scrolling through it and refused to return it. A struggle followed, during which Norbury tried to damage the phone.
As the victim attempted to get it back, Norbury punched her twice in the face, scratched her, and then bit her on the upper arm, causing what the prosecution described as “severe” bite marks. She sustained reddening and scratches on both sides of her face, as well as the deep bite wounds.
The court heard that as she tried to flee, Norbury followed her outside, shouting, and threw soil from a plant pot into her face before she managed to run to a bus stop and call police.
Norbury was arrested shortly afterwards and later admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He appeared for sentencing via video link after being remanded in custody.
Prosecutor Nicola Hoskins stated that the victim had been subjected to acts intended to “degrade” her. The court also heard that Norbury had previous convictions, including for breaching a court order.
His defence said he struggled with drug and alcohol issues and was remorseful. However, Judge Simon Hickey said the severity of the bites, along with the overall violence of the attack, meant that only an immediate prison term was appropriate.
Norbury received an eight-month custodial sentence, of which he will serve half in prison before being released on licence.
