2025 – Brother Kicked and Punched Sister During Violent Row at Mother’s Home
A violent family dispute erupted at a property in Barton after a late-night confrontation at their terminally ill mother’s home, a court has heard.
Jamie Rees, 29, of Winterton, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm following the incident, which unfolded in the early hours of June 30 last year.
Wedding Celebration Turned Violent
Grimsby Crown Court was told that tensions escalated shortly after 1am when Rees’ estranged sister arrived at the address and began banging loudly on the door. CCTV footage presented to the court showed her outside the property, where she had reportedly been told to leave.
At some point during the confrontation, their mother — who was terminally ill at the time — ended up on the floor. Although this moment was not captured on camera, it was described as a key flashpoint in what followed.
Prosecutors said Rees emerged from the house visibly angry and shouted at his sister before a physical confrontation broke out.
Assault in Garden and Street
The court heard that Rees pulled his sister by the hair into the garden area before the violence continued into the street. She suffered grazes to her head and face along with a swollen lip as a result of the assault.
Prosecuting counsel outlined how Rees had been celebrating at a wedding earlier that day and had consumed alcohol before the incident occurred.
CCTV footage shown in court captured parts of the altercation, including the moments leading up to the violence.
Defence and Sentencing
Defending, Fintan Molloy told the court his client had been overcome with emotion after seeing his mother on the ground and had “jumped to conclusions.” He said Rees had since struggled to watch the CCTV footage back and was remorseful for his actions.
Judge Gurdial Singh described Rees’ behaviour as “disgraceful” and told him the consequences of his actions had “come to your door.”
Rees was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to:
• Wear an alcohol monitoring tag for 120 days
• Complete 10 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days
• Carry out 150 hours of unpaid work
The court heard that Rees had lost his job as a carer following the incident.
CCTV Evidence
CCTV from the property played a significant role in the proceedings, showing:
• The sister arriving at approximately 1am
• Loud banging on the door
• Rees exiting the property and confronting her
• The altercation spilling into the garden and street
The footage was described in court as difficult viewing and formed part of the evidence considered during sentencing.
