James Wright – Sunderland
Sunderland Man Jailed for Eight Years for Rape and Abuse
Sunderland, 2025 — A man who raped two women and subjected one of them to months of coercive and controlling abuse has been jailed for eight years.
James Wright, 25, of Hampstead Road, Sunderland, carried out the horrific crimes at his home address last year. Newcastle Crown Court heard that Wright raped both women, and in one incident, assaulted a victim by throwing a mobile phone at her.
After a lengthy investigation, he was charged with multiple offences. In May, Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of assault.
At sentencing, the judge imposed an eight-year custodial sentence, with a further four years to be served on extended licence after release.
Victim’s Statement
“So now that he’s been sentenced I can expose my vile, narcissistic ex for who he really is. It was months of abuse and torture — controlling every part of my life, from my money to who I was allowed to see. He even forced me to leave my gran’s funeral early.
He would lock me in the house, force me to do whatever he wanted, and when I tried to leave, he ruined my life.
He burned and destroyed everything I owned — my passport, birth certificate, belongings and keepsakes. All gone. Eight years in jail isn’t enough. When he gets out, he will just move on to his next victim.”
Police Praise Victims’ Courage
Northumbria Police praised both victims for their bravery in coming forward. Detectives said their evidence was key in ensuring Wright was brought to justice.
Wright has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register and will be subject to strict monitoring upon his release.
