Date of Sentencing: March 17, 2023

David Andrew Sullivan was sentenced in the Royal Court after being found guilty of three counts of rape by a unanimous jury following a trial in January 2023. The jury reached their verdict after four hours and 49 minutes of deliberation.

Sullivan received a prison sentence of nearly ten years and was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 13 years. Additionally, he was given a restraining order for an indefinite period to protect the victim.

According to the report, Sullivan’s offences involved extreme physical and psychological abuse. Evidence presented in court revealed that he had:
• Carved into the victim’s skin using a piercing needle, an act described by Crown Advocate Simon Thomas as being intended to “assert control” over her.
• Put a pillow over the victim’s face, causing her to feel “trapped.”
• Watched her from a tree outside her home and threatened to harm her family.

The victim’s injuries were consistent with being raped, according to medical examinations.

Detective Constable Jo Le Maistre of the States of Jersey Police praised the victim’s courage and patience throughout the legal process, saying that the case demonstrated the police’s commitment to investigating and prosecuting sexual violence.

Le Maistre added that the authorities aim to ensure victims of sexual assault feel supported and safe throughout the criminal justice process. She acknowledged how reporting rape can be a terrifying experience and emphasised the need to minimise trauma while prioritising victim care.
