David Hey, of Millbank Terrace, Wingate, had been struggling with drug addiction and mental-health issues when he relapsed and became violent. According to Teesside Crown Court, Hey punched his partner, took her car without permission and drove it straight through a brick garden wall at an address in Hartlepool, destroying children’s bikes and scooters. The woman’s young child was reportedly in the room when she was punched.

When officers searched for him, Hey fled. Twelve days later he was located, but while being arrested he headbutted a police officer, bit another officer on the arm and kicked a third. He admitted he had been under the influence of drink and drugs and said he “felt guilty” for the assault and damage.

Hey pleaded guilty to assault, dangerous driving, criminal damage and four counts of assaulting an emergency worker. He has 41 previous convictions for 98 offences, including serious assault and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear.

He was sentenced to 22 months in prison. After time spent on remand is deducted, he has seven months and eight days left to serve. The judge also banned him from driving for three years, starting from the day he is released.
