2017 – Man Avoids Jail After Series of Assaults on Ex-Partner

Damian Bridge, 40, of Colne, Lancashire, was convicted at Burnley Crown Court of assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Despite the severity of the offences, he was handed an 18‑month suspended sentence and an 18‑month restraining order.

Victim Justine Wood, 40, suffered the following injuries during the course of their relationship:

  • Fractured jaw
  • Broken nose
  • Bite wounds
  • Head injury requiring stitches
  • Lasting damage to her hands

The relationship began in 2012, and within a year, Bridge was already exhibiting controlling and isolating behaviour. Ms. Wood testified that she was cut off from friends and told where she could and couldn’t go. Over a four-year period, the abuse escalated into frequent physical assaults.

Examples included being struck in the face for asking to turn down the TV volume, and being attacked and bitten during arguments. One incident left her surviving on soup for weeks while recovering from a broken jaw.

Even after being handed a community order in 2016, Bridge continued his abuse. Ms. Wood allowed him to stay at her home post-surgery, during which time he attacked her again. She has since installed CCTV due to ongoing fear for her safety.

“I’m a survivor, but justice has not been served. I’ve been left with physical and mental scars.” — Justine Wood
