A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment for a series of offences committed against a woman.

Bradley Green, formerly of Cucumber Lane in Weston, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Wednesday 3 December for sentencing, after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to the following offences:

– Two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm

– Intentional strangulation

– Controlling or coercive behaviour

– Harassment causing fear of violence

The offences were committed against one woman.

The court heard that Green displayed obsessing and controlling behaviour, including using tracking apps to monitor the victim’s location and challenging her when it was turned off or if she was somewhere he didn’t expect.

He would also challenge her about male contacts she had on social media, demand that she deleted them, and would regularly check her phone.

Green admitted being violent towards the victim, spitting at her, strangling her and causing actual bodily harm.

He also damaged her property and hounded her with calls and text messages to get her attention, threatening to harm himself unless she replied.

The victim’s personal statement was read out in court. In it she wrote: “I remember a time when I was the one on the other side saying ‘why don’t you just leave’. But the reality of it is, when you put so much love and trust in someone, it feels impossible to leave.

And by the time that trust is broken and you’re ready to leave, it’s not safe to…

“’Maybe this time he’ll change’ ‘it’s just been a bad week’ .. by the time I wanted out, I couldn’t. How can you go out when you know he’ll show up?”

Green initially denied the offences, claiming he was a victim of abuse, but later changed his plea and was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment. He was also made subject of a restraining order.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Samuel Jones said: “This was a protracted and complex case, involving the review of over 140,000 mobile phone messages. These messages painted a detailed picture of the lives these individuals were living while in a relationship.
