A man has been jailed after carrying out a brutal attack on his own mother, leaving her so badly injured that she had to be placed in an induced coma.

Alan Clegg, 42, of no fixed address, appeared at Chester Crown Court on 16 April, where he was sentenced after admitting to a charge of section 18 wounding with intent.

He also admitted harassment in breach of a restraining order relating to a former partner, along with possession of a Class B drug (cannabis) and a Class A drug (cocaine).

Clegg was handed a 14-year sentence — 10 and a half years to be served behind bars and the remaining years on extended licence. He was also given restraining orders to protect both women involved.

The court heard how, on 26 December 2024, Clegg became involved in an argument with his mother at her home in Frodsham before subjecting her to a vicious assault.

During the ordeal, he demanded that she transfer money into his bank account. Hoping to end the violence, she complied, but he continued the attack before leaving her lying injured on her bedroom floor, without a phone or any way to call for help.

Although he briefly returned, he left her once again unable to move. He then contacted a former partner to take him to a hotel in Runcorn, telling her he had argued with his mother — an act that also breached his restraining order.

The following day, 27 December, the victim managed to alert other family members and call for an ambulance. When they arrived, they found her curled up in agony, screaming in pain.

Police officers later tracked Clegg down at the Runcorn hotel, where he was arrested. He was found carrying both cannabis and cocaine.

The victim remained in hospital with multiple injuries and was left terrified that Clegg might somehow reach her, despite being reassured he was in custody.

Her family endured the agony of not knowing whether she would survive, and were horrified by the extreme level of violence their brother had inflicted on their mother.

Detective Constable Peta Ticer said:

“The level of violence was appalling and has left the victim, his own mother, not only with serious physical injuries but also lasting psychological trauma. She has become too frightened to leave her home and continues to relive the ordeal in her nightmares.

He has forever changed her life, and the lives of his own family. What he has done is truly unforgivable. We will always do everything possible to bring offenders like him before the courts and secure justice for their victims.”
