December 2025 – A woman was left fearing she would be killed after her partner launched a violent attack during a drunken episode, forcing her to flee and beg staff at a petrol station to lock her inside for safety.

Stuart Dickson, 33, of Deanery Street, Bedlington, was sentenced to 22 months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was also given an indefinite restraining order preventing any contact with the victim.

How the Violence Began

The court heard that Dickson and the victim had been in a relationship for around four to five months at the time of the incident on May 5.

They had been drinking together, and at one point the woman attempted to order more alcohol, but the order was cancelled. This caused Dickson to become angry and aggressive, triggering the first assault inside the home.

He:
• Slapped and punched the woman multiple times to the face and body
• Dragged her to the floor
• Pressed his foot across her throat and stood on her neck, restricting her breathing
• Left her believing she could lose consciousness and die

Escalation – Trip to Buy More Alcohol

Following the initial attack, Dickson demanded they leave the home.
The pair took a taxi to his brother’s address, where Dickson claimed both men would kill her – but no one answered the door.

They then went to a Shell petrol station, where Dickson intended to buy more alcohol.

Her Escape – “Save my life”

The moment Dickson stepped away, the woman ran inside the garage shop and pleaded with staff:

“Please lock the door and save my life.”

Staff immediately secured the entrance and contacted police.
Dickson was arrested shortly afterwards.

Victim’s Words

In her statement, she said:
• “I keep seeing the look in his eyes while he was assaulting me.”
• “I genuinely believed he would kill me. I’m constantly on edge.”
• “If I didn’t go to the garage and ask for help, I wouldn’t be here now.”

She added that she lives with flashbacks and fears what may happen when he is released, knowing he may seek to “punish” her for speaking out.

Judge’s Remarks

Recorder Carl Gumsley told Dickson:

“You used your foot on her neck and effectively strangled her. She thought she was going to lose consciousness. She was thankfully able to escape.”

Dickson has 31 previous convictions, including violent offences.
He was heavily intoxicated at the time and claimed he could not remember what he did.

⚠️ CLAIRE’S LAW – PUBLIC SAFETY

Any woman who believes she may be at risk from Dickson, or anyone else, can apply for a Claire’s Law disclosure (Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme) to request police-held information about a partner’s history of domestic violence.
