Bridgwater Man Jailed After Police Find Over 40,000 Child Abuse Images

A 36-year-old man from Bridgwater has been jailed after police discovered more than 40,000 indecent images of children stored across multiple electronic devices.

Matthew O’Brien, of Parkway, appeared at Taunton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to:
• Possession of indecent images of children
• Possession of an extreme pornographic image involving an animal

The investigation began in 2022, when police executed a search warrant at O’Brien’s home. Officers seized a computer, USB device, and mobile phone. Forensic examination revealed an extensive collection of child sexual abuse material, spanning all categories of seriousness.

The haul included Category A images, the most severe classification, depicting the rape and torture of children, along with disturbing material involving bestiality.

Judge Cook sentenced O’Brien to 10 months’ imprisonment on each charge, to run concurrently. He was also made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), limiting his access to internet-enabled devices and online activity. O’Brien will also be required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register.

Public Protection Measures: Sarah’s Law and Clare’s Law

Sarah’s Law (Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme)
Under Sarah’s Law, parents, carers, or guardians concerned about an individual who has contact with a child can formally request information from the police about whether that person has a history of sexual offending. This scheme is designed to provide a safeguarding route for families who fear that someone may pose a risk to children.

Clare’s Law (Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme)
Clare’s Law allows police to disclose relevant past domestic abuse offences to individuals who may be at risk. Applications can be made by anyone concerned about a partner’s history, or by third parties worried about someone they know. This law aims to protect potential victims by enabling them to make informed decisions about their safety.
