Woman jailed after fabricating serious abuse allegations that led to armed police responses and an innocent man being jailed

Kirsty Barr, 24, from Barton in North Lincolnshire, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after admitting perverting the course of justice by making a series of false and serious allegations against her former partner, Ryan Kerrison.

Barr repeatedly claimed she was the victim of severe domestic abuse, telling police, the media, and the public that Mr Kerrison had assaulted her, harassed her, threatened her with a firearm, and attacked her with a knife. She also gave national media interviews portraying him as a “monster”.

Her allegations resulted in devastating consequences. On one occasion, Mr Kerrison was remanded in custody for almost two months after Barr reported he had breached a restraining order by throwing stones at her window and sending messages. That conviction was later quashed after evidence emerged showing her claims were false.

Six months later, Barr escalated her allegations further, telling police that Mr Kerrison had chased her upstairs, assaulted her, cut her with a knife, thrown her down the stairs, and held a gun to her head. These claims prompted a full armed police response, yet investigations proved he could not have committed the offences.

Humberside Police confirmed that Barr knowingly fabricated these reports, misleading officers, the courts, and the public. Chief Superintendent Christine Wilson said the impact on Mr Kerrison had been “harrowing”, adding that he lost his freedom, reputation, and time with his child due to crimes he did not commit.

The court heard Barr’s false allegations were repeated to “anyone who would listen”, including through national and social media, portraying herself as a victim while causing prolonged harm to an innocent man.

Sentencing Barr, the court noted the seriousness of abusing the justice system and the damage caused not only to Mr Kerrison, but also to public trust and genuine victims of domestic abuse.

Police stressed that while domestic abuse disproportionately affects women, false allegations can and do destroy lives, and all claims must be investigated thoroughly and fairly to protect real victims.

Sentence:
• 3 years 9 months imprisonment for perverting the course of justice
