Care Worker Jailed for Sexual Abuse of Elderly Residents

A former care worker from Glasgow has been convicted of sexually abusing three elderly men while they were residents in a care home.

David Hillhouse, 32, preyed on vulnerable men aged 92, 71 and 66 between 2017 and 2022 while carrying out personal care duties. The offences came to light after the eldest victim, who has since died, became visibly distressed and indicated to family members that he did not want Hillhouse near him.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Hillhouse abused his position of trust while assisting residents with intimate care and toileting. In one incident, a nurse returned to a room and witnessed Hillhouse sexually assaulting a resident who was lying on his bed. Another assault was observed by a colleague during a care demonstration.

Prosecutor Ryan Watson told the court that the victims were extremely distressed by what happened to them. One victim’s granddaughter described her relative as being upset, crying and breaking down when recounting the abuse. Despite physical frailty, the court heard there were no concerns about the victims’ mental capacity.

Hillhouse, from the Penilee area of Glasgow, was found guilty by a jury of sexually assaulting one resident and of ill-treating and wilfully neglecting two others. He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced in July. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register and no longer works in the care sector.

The case has been described as a serious breach of trust against highly vulnerable individuals who relied on carers for safety and dignity.

⚠️ Clare’s Law / Disclosure Scheme

Anyone concerned about a partner, carer, or individual having access to vulnerable people can contact Police Scotland to ask about the Domestic Abuse Disclosure Scheme (Clare’s Law). This allows relevant information about a person’s history of abuse or violence to be disclosed where there is a safeguarding risk.

If you are worried about abuse in a care setting or the safety of a vulnerable adult, report concerns to police or social services immediately.
