Convicted of killing her own dog in a violent drunken attack

Jordanna Wheeler, 29, from Loughor in Swansea, has been convicted after a shocking case of extreme animal cruelty in which she beat her Mastiff-type dog, Anubis, to death with a saucepan.

The incident happened after Wheeler returned home drunk from a party. Witnesses raised concerns and police attended her flat on McRitchie Place, Gendros. Officers found the property in an appalling state, and inside the living room they discovered Anubis lying dead on his bed.

A search of the flat uncovered a severely bent and deformed saucepan covered in dog hair — the same item Wheeler had used to repeatedly strike the dog. The level of damage to the pan indicated significant and repeated force.

Wheeler was arrested and gave no comment in interview.

A veterinary pathologist later confirmed that Anubis had suffered major blunt-force trauma to the head, consistent with a sustained violent assault.

Wheeler pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. She already had five prior convictions, all for violent offences, including assaults on police officers and an assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Her defence claimed she had experienced a traumatic childhood marked by neglect and alcohol misuse within the home, and that she continues to struggle with her mental health.

Judge Geraint Walters condemned the brutality of the attack, telling Wheeler:

“You are not fit to look after yourself, let alone a dog. This was as savage an attack on an animal as I have ever heard. The public do not take kindly to the neglect and abuse of pets.”

• 16-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months
• 120-day alcohol abstinence requirement
• Rehabilitation activity days
• Three-month curfew
• 10-year ban on owning or keeping animals
