❌MICHAEL DANN – HULL❌
2025 –
Michael Dann Convicted of Assaulting Partner
Michael Dann, 40, of Park Avenue, west Hull, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of assaulting his partner in a series of violent incidents earlier this year. Hull Crown Court heard that the offences occurred between March 31 and May 3, 2023, and involved serious physical attacks.
During one incident, Dann allegedly suffocated his partner while she was lying in bed. The court heard that he had been taking illegal anabolic steroids at the time, which he knew could make him more aggressive and were likely to aggravate his loss of control.
Judge Richard Woolfall described the suffocation as a potentially “catastrophic” incident, noting that even a small increase in pressure could result in serious injury or death. The judge told the court that Dann only stopped when his nose began to bleed and that he initially blamed his partner for the incident.
In a separate incident, the pair were out driving together when an argument escalated. Dann reportedly braked suddenly, pulled into a layby, and slammed the van door on his partner’s foot while driving off at speed. He also pulled her hair, struck her face, and held her in a headlock when she attempted to leave the vehicle. The victim described feeling as though she might never see her children again and reported ongoing trauma, including sleep disturbances and reliving the events during the night.
Dann denied the offences during police interviews. He had a prior criminal record, including seven convictions for offences such as assault and criminal damage, some involving a former partner. Mitigating factors presented at sentencing included his late recognition of wrongdoing, expressions of remorse, cessation of steroid use, maintaining a positive new relationship for six months, and holding employment with a water company and as a sub-contractor. He had remained out of trouble since the 2023 offences and had been assessed by the probation service as low risk of reconviction.
Judge Woolfall emphasised the seriousness of the offences, noting that Dann’s actions put the victim at considerable risk of harm and could easily have led to death. In addition to the custodial sentence, Dann was given a seven-year restraining order to protect the victim. The judge told Dann: “Your offending is so serious against a partner, and against your record, that only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate to deal with the offending.”
The court also highlighted the role of anabolic steroids in the offences, noting that their use is illegal and that they are known to increase aggression. Dann acknowledged the impact of his behaviour, apologising to the victim after the incidents.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence, the potential risks associated with the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and the long-lasting impact such offences can have on victims.
