A man has been sentenced to three years in prison after leaving a baby with severe and shocking injuries in a series of violent attacks.

Daniel McColl, of Carr Hill Road, Gateshead, inflicted grievous bodily harm on the infant, leaving the child with a fractured thigh bone and multiple broken ribs. The extent of the injuries was discovered when the baby’s nappy was changed at their home in Northumberland, prompting an urgent hospital admission. Medical staff confirmed a spiral fracture to the left thigh, as well as several rib fractures, highlighting the severity of the abuse.

During proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Richard Lowden emphasised the gravity of the case, stating: “You cannot get a more vulnerable victim than a baby.”

McColl admitted responsibility for the injuries during police interviews. His defence counsel, Vince Ward, told the court that McColl expressed genuine remorse for his actions. Despite this, the court underscored that the level of harm inflicted on such a defenseless child warranted immediate custodial punishment.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of infants and the absolute responsibility of adults to protect them. McColl will serve three years in prison for the assault.
