❌MARTIN NEWTON – SPALDING/GRANTHAM❌
Wisbech Man Jailed for Knife Assault and Strangulation
A 43‑year‑old man from Wisbech has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to a series of violent offences.
Martin Newton admitted to the following charges at Cambridge Crown Court on 3 May:
• Two counts of non‑fatal strangulation
• Assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH)
• Wounding
Court documents show that the offences stemmed from an incident in which Newton held a kitchen knife to a former friend’s throat and applied pressure to her neck, preventing her from calling for help. She reportedly managed to remove the knife but sustained a cut to her hand in the process.
The case also referenced a previous incident in December 2022 when Newton strangled the same woman and caused bruising to her arms.
Detective Constable Ryan Ellington of Cambridgeshire Police described Newton’s behaviour as “deplorable,” noting that the victim had approached him out of concern for his welfare—and was attacked in return.
Newton’s two‑year custodial sentence reflects the court’s assessment of the severity of the offences and the risk posed by his actions.
