Teen Speaks Out After Campaign of Abuse by Estranged Mother

Bathgate, Scotland – A Scottish teenager has bravely come forward to share her harrowing experience of emotional and psychological abuse at the hands of her estranged mother, Wendy Miller. The abuse, which included verbal threats and pressure to self-harm, resulted in Miller facing court action.

Devon McKinlay, 18, now living in Bathgate, endured months of targeted abuse after moving out of her mother’s home in Whitburn in January of the previous year. The abuse escalated into a disturbing pattern of offensive messages, threats of violence, and coercive attempts to encourage self-harm.

The case was brought before Livingston Sheriff Court, where on March 7, Wendy Miller admitted to causing her daughter “fear or alarm.” She pleaded guilty to making offensive remarks, threats of violence, and inciting self-harm. Miller was sentenced to 125 hours of community service and placed under two years of supervision.

In voice notes submitted as evidence, Miller could be heard telling Devon that she “wished she had aborted her,” and even threatening future physical attacks. “You got a clean boot to the face with my Doc Martens on, you begged me to stop, remember?” one voice message revealed.

Following the separation from her mother, Devon initially moved in with an ex-boyfriend before settling with her father Tony and stepmother Heather, who both offered immediate support. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Heather said it was a “no-brainer” to take Devon in, describing how Wendy “tried to break her down as a person.”

Devon described feeling unsafe in public spaces, saying she feared running into her mother, who had repeatedly threatened her life. “I can’t get a bus by myself. I always feel like she’s going to see me and something bad is going to happen,” she said.

She also spoke about the emotional toll of the abuse, explaining how she kept voice messages from her mother threatening to “wring her neck” and physically assault her. “She’s delusional,” Devon added. “She thinks I still love her and care about her – and I don’t.”

Heather, her stepmother, described the abuse as “horrific,” saying Devon would often feel physically sick after receiving messages from Miller. “It’s traumatic,” she added, calling on Miller to allow Devon the space to rebuild her life in peace.

Devon’s story has resonated with many who have experienced similar abuse within the home. Her courage in speaking out has shed light on the serious emotional damage that such conduct can cause, particularly when it comes from a parent.
