CONVICTED | Martyn Payne, 34, and Kirsty Burford, 32, from Stonehouse, Plymouth – barricaded two nine-month-old puppies inside a bathroom and left them to die.

Prosecutors representing the RSPCA said the couple left the the bull-breed puppies, named Trigger and Pablo, alone in the bathroom with no food and water.

RSPCA officers who attended the property in Millbridge, Stoke, Plymouth, found the bathroom door had even been barricaded by items in front of it.

The court was told ‘the smell of rotting flesh was eye watering’ and the bodies of the two dogs were found in the bathroom.

The prosecution said the dogs were victims of a ‘very high level of suffering’ through hunger, dehydration and lack of exercise during ‘prolonged neglect and a deliberate disregard for the animals’.

Payne, a convicted heroin and crack cocaine dealer, and Burford admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs between August 1, 2023 and October 17, 2023.

Sentencing |
Burford: 20 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months; 12-month supervision order with up to 15 days of ‘rehabilitation’. Disqualified from owning dogs for up to 15 years and can appeal after 10 years.

Payne’s sentencing is to follow after his case was returned from the crown court to the magistrates court.
