CONVICTED | Lisa Leach age unknown, of Moor Street, Wednesbury WS10 – for the starvation and neglect of a 15-year-old dog found in an emaciated condition in her cluttered faeces-filled garden.

The RSPCA prosecuted Leach in relation to her elderly Labrador, Lucas, who had to be put down due to his poor health.

On seeing the dog, RSPCA investigator Karl Marston said he was “immediately concerned” for the dog’s body condition, noting that “his waist appeared very thin”.

Lucas’s ribcage and hip bones were prominent even through his thick fur. He was also wet with an unsteady gait and was only able to stand for a short period.

The investigator described the garden where the dog had been living. He said it “was very cluttered with household rubbish, dog faeces, and the area nearest the door was covered in thick brown sludgy material.

“There were scattered dog biscuits by the door and some bowls in the area.”

Inspector Marston said: “Lucas relied on Leach to ensure he was given the care he needed and deserved.

“He was an elderly dog who should have been treated with kindness and compassion but was instead left to suffer without any help or the vet care he desperately needed.”

“Dogs feel pain and suffering just like we do and always deserve to be shown kindness and compassion.”

Sentencing | 18 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months; ordered to pay £800 and a £154 victim surcharge. Banned from owning animals for 10 years.
