Prison Porter Jailed After Brutal Attack Leaves Woman With PTSD
A former hospital porter has been handed a two-year prison sentence after launching a violent assault that left his victim bruised, terrified—and diagnosed with PTSD.
Mark John Bartlett, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of grave and criminal assault hours into his trial at the Royal Court. His attacks, which took place in March and April 2020, included strangling the woman, hitting her in the face repeatedly, and later throwing her into a wardrobe with such force it cracked.
During the first incident, Bartlett grabbed the woman’s throat so violently that she struggled to breathe. In her distress, friends later noted her face was purple and swelling.
The court heard that his messaging in early 2020 contained admissions of temper loss, and that he described past episodes of “kicking off.” On a later occasion, amid an argument, he threw her into a wardrobe, which broke under the force.
Bartlett initially denied the attacks, claiming any contact was in self-defence. Then, in later interviews, he said he could not recall how the injuries occurred, and tried to deflect blame. But under pressure in court, he finally accepted the “abhorrent nature” of his actions.
Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae, leading the sentencing, noted that the seriousness of the violence and the need to deter similar behaviour required a custodial penalty. In handing down the sentence, he said assault of this kind must be met with firmer sentences than in the past.
Afterwards, Detective Constable Denis McGee praised the victim’s courage, saying: “The victim in this case showed an immense amount of bravery and determination to see this through to the end.” He added that support agencies remain available to victims seeking help.
