Domestic Violence Awareness and Clare’s Law

A survivor of severe domestic and sexual violence is urging others to make use of Clare’s Law – the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme – which allows anyone to ask police whether a current or former partner has a history of abuse.

She says:

“I was left with life-changing injuries after being attacked and abused by William Bulloch. I survived only because of quick medical help, but the emotional and physical scars will last forever. If I’d known about Clare’s Law, I could have checked his background and protected myself and my child. I want other women to know they have that right.”

Police and victim-support services encourage anyone who feels unsafe or unsure about a partner’s history to contact their local police force and request a disclosure under Clare’s Law. Applications can be made at any police station or online, and information is given if officers believe someone is at risk of harm.

If you or someone you know is in danger or being controlled, you can reach the National Domestic Abuse Helpline (UK) free and confidentially on 0808 2000 247, or visit www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk.
